Seeing a neurosurgeon for the first time can feel intimidating. Many patients arrive at Bangalore Neuro Centre worried about a scan report they do not fully understand, or anxious that the word “surgery” means an operation is certain.
It usually does not. A large part of what we do at Bangalore Neuro Centre, Electronics City is explaining what a scan really shows, ruling out serious problems and, very often, telling patients they do not need surgery.
This guide explains exactly what to bring, what happens during your first consultation, and how to get the most out of your visit — so you can walk in prepared and walk out with clear answers.

Before Your Visit: Book Your Appointment
You can book your first consultation in three ways:
- Call +91 63802 71088
- WhatsApp the same number — you can attach your scan reports at the same time
- Send an enquiry through our contact page
When you book, it helps to tell us briefly:
- Your main problem (for example, “leg pain for 2 months” or “MRI shows a brain lesion”)
- How long you have had symptoms
- Whether you already have an MRI or CT scan
- Whether it is urgent
Urgent cases are always prioritised. If you or a family member has sudden severe headache, sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, a seizure, or has had a serious head injury, do not wait for an appointment — go straight to the Manipal Hospital Electronics City emergency department.
What to Bring to Your First Visit
A complete set of documents saves time and helps Dr. Shyam give you a clear opinion on the first visit. Use this checklist.
1. Your scans — films, CDs and reports
This is the single most important item.
- MRI and CT scans — bring the CD or DVD, the films, and the written report
- X-rays of the spine, if taken
- All older scans too, even from years ago — comparing old and new scans often answers whether a problem is growing or stable
The written report alone is not enough. Dr. Shyam will look at the actual images, because the report and the images do not always tell the same story. If your scan centre gave you an online link instead of a CD, keep the link and password ready on your phone.
2. Previous medical records
- Discharge summaries from any past hospital stays
- Earlier consultation notes from neurologists, orthopaedic or spine doctors
- Operation notes if you have had any previous brain or spine surgery
- Nerve conduction study (NCS), EMG or EEG reports, if done
3. Current medicines
Bring a list — or simply the strips and bottles — of everything you take, including:
- Painkillers and nerve pain medicines
- Blood thinners (aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin and others) — these matter a lot if surgery or an injection is being considered
- Diabetes, blood pressure and thyroid medicines
- Any Ayurvedic, homeopathic or supplement products
4. Blood test reports
Recent sugar, kidney function, blood count or thyroid reports, if you have them.
5. ID, insurance and health ID
- A government photo ID
- Your health insurance card or policy details and corporate insurance details, if applicable
- Your ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) number, if you have one — you can create one on the official ABHA portal
6. A written list of your questions
It is easy to forget questions in the consultation room. Write them down beforehand (see our suggested list below).
7. A family member
For any major condition — especially brain tumours, aneurysms or a possible operation — we strongly recommend bringing a family member. Decisions are easier when the people who will support you hear the explanation first-hand.
Quick Checklist
| Bring | Why it matters |
|---|---|

| Previous consultation notes and discharge summaries | Avoids repeating tests |
| List of current medicines | Especially blood thinners |
| Recent blood test reports | Helps if treatment is planned |
| Photo ID, insurance card, ABHA number | Registration and cashless treatment |
| List of questions | So nothing is missed |
| A family member | Support and shared decisions |

What Happens at Your First Consultation
Most first consultations follow the same simple steps.
Step 1: Registration
At the hospital reception, you will register as a new patient and receive a hospital ID. Keep this ID — it is used for all future visits, tests and billing.
Step 2: Your story
Dr. Shyam will begin by listening. He will ask about:
- When your symptoms started and how they have changed
- What makes them better or worse
- How they affect your work, sleep and daily life
- Treatments you have already tried
- Your general health and other medical conditions
At Bangalore Neuro Centre, our guiding principle is “understand the person before the pathology.” Your symptoms and your life matter as much as what the scan shows.
Step 3: Neurological examination
A painless physical examination to check:
- Strength in your arms and legs
- Sensation (touch, pinprick)
- Reflexes
- Walking, balance and coordination
- For spine problems, how bending and leg raising affect your pain
Step 4: Reviewing your scans together
Dr. Shyam will go through your MRI or CT images with you on screen, pointing out exactly where the problem is and what it means in plain language. This is often the moment patients find most reassuring — seeing the scan explained removes a lot of fear.
Step 5: Diagnosis and treatment options
You will leave knowing:
- What the problem is — in clear, everyday words
- How serious it is — and whether it is urgent
- All your options — usually starting with non-surgical treatment such as medicines, physiotherapy or injections
- Whether surgery is actually needed — and if so, why, what kind, and what recovery looks like
Many patients are surprised to leave the first visit with a physiotherapy plan instead of a surgery date. For example, most slipped discs improve without an operation — we explain why in Slipped Disc: Do You Really Need Surgery?
Step 6: Next steps
Depending on your situation, you may be advised:
- Further tests (a new MRI, CT, blood tests, nerve studies)
- A trial of medicines and physiotherapy, with a follow-up date
- A referral to a neurologist, pain specialist or physiotherapist
- Planning for surgery, including a written cost estimate and insurance guidance
Questions Worth Asking
Bring these, or your own, written down:
- What exactly is my diagnosis?
- Is this serious or urgent?
- Do my scan findings explain my symptoms?
- What happens if I wait and do nothing for now?
- What non-surgical treatments can I try first?
- If I need surgery, what type, and is a minimally invasive option suitable?
- What is the expected cost, and will my insurance cover it?
- How long is recovery, and when can I return to work?
- Which warning signs should make me come back immediately?
If cost is on your mind, our guides on slipped disc surgery cost in Bangalore and minimally invasive spine surgery cost in Bangalore give typical ranges.
Coming for a Second Opinion?
Many patients come to Bangalore Neuro Centre, Electronics City for a second opinion after being advised surgery elsewhere. This is completely normal, and a good doctor will always welcome it.
For a second opinion, bring:
- All scans (CDs and reports) — including the ones the first doctor used
- The first doctor’s written advice or prescription
- Any surgical estimate you were given
Not ready to visit yet? You can WhatsApp your MRI or CT report to +91 63802 71088. Every report is reviewed personally, and we will tell you honestly whether an in-person consultation is needed.
Special Situations
Bringing a child
For children with head shape concerns, hydrocephalus, spinal conditions or head injuries, bring the child’s birth and vaccination records, any ultrasound or scan reports, and a favourite toy or snack. A parent or guardian must be present.
Elderly patients
Bring all current medicines, a list of other doctors they see (cardiologist, diabetologist), and a family member who knows their medical history. Many neurosurgical problems in older adults are very treatable — see neurosurgery in elderly patients.
Patients travelling from outside Bangalore
Send your reports on WhatsApp first. This lets us tell you in advance whether you need new scans, so you can plan your stay and avoid repeat trips.
After Your Visit
