Understand the person before the pathology.
Dr. Shyam trained at two of India's most storied institutions — Stanley Medical College and Madras Medical College — completing his M.Ch. in Neurosurgery with two university gold medals. But he believes the real training began after that: a cerebrovascular and bypass fellowship in Japan under Prof. Yoko Kato, one of the world's foremost aneurysm surgeons, followed by advanced skull base certification at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York under Prof. Antonio Bernardo, and advanced microneurosurgical training at the Yaşargil course in Istanbul.
Over a decade of practice, his work has spanned the entire neurosurgical spectrum — complex aneurysms and AVMs, awake brain tumor surgery, skull base tumors, pediatric neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery and deep brain stimulation, and the full range of spine surgery with a strong preference for minimally invasive techniques.
What patients remember, though, is usually not the technique — it is the honesty. Dr. Shyam is known for telling patients when they do not need surgery, for answering late-night WhatsApp messages about frightening scan reports, and for explaining complex conditions in language families actually understand.
