Spinal infections and TB spine

Tuberculosis of the spine (Pott’s disease) remains common in India and is very treatable โ€” but it is frequently diagnosed late, after weeks of back pain have been dismissed as a sprain. Pyogenic infections (discitis, vertebral osteomyelitis, epidural abscess) can progress even faster and may threaten the spinal cord within days.

Our approach

  • Prompt diagnosis โ€” MRI, blood investigations and image-guided biopsy where needed
  • Medical treatment first: most spinal TB is cured with anti-tubercular therapy and bracing, without any operation
  • Surgery for the right indications โ€” cord compression with weakness, spinal instability, significant deformity or failure of medical therapy
  • Debridement, decompression and stabilisation, including minimally invasive options

Fever with back pain, night sweats, weight loss, or progressive leg weakness with spine pain should never be ignored โ€” early treatment prevents deformity and paralysis.
