Epilepsy surgery and deep brain stimulation
When seizures do not respond to two or more appropriate medications, surgery is no longer a last resort โ for the right patient it is the treatment most likely to achieve seizure freedom. Dr. Shyam offers comprehensive functional neurosurgery for epilepsy and movement disorders.
Epilepsy surgery
- Detailed pre-surgical evaluation โ video EEG, MRI, PET
- Resective surgery for temporal lobe epilepsy and focal lesions
- Lesionectomy for cavernomas, tumors and cortical dysplasia
- Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) for patients unsuitable for resection
Deep brain stimulation (DBS)
DBS is a pacemaker-like implant that delivers precise electrical stimulation to deep brain targets. It can dramatically improve tremor, stiffness and slowness in Parkinson’s disease, as well as essential tremor and dystonia, when medications begin to fail or cause disabling fluctuations. Candidacy is assessed jointly with a movement disorder neurologist.
